I agree that children must be taught how to think, not what to think. It is so important to be able to help children explore the world around them. As teachers, we guide our students to see what they know and find strategies to help scaffold new information. I find asking open ended questions a great tool to help children develop problem solving skills.

Inspiration from Innocence

There was an occasion at my school, in which a little girl was brought in late by her mother. The girl had not yet had breakfast at home and had missed breakfast at school by being late. I rushed to the kitchen and grabbed her a bananna, bowl of cereal, and a glass of milk and sat her at the table to eat while all of her friends were on the carpet with their teacher. I came back into the classroom a few minutes later and there was a little boy sitting at the table with her. He said, "Ms. Shana, I decided to sit here with her while she ate. I was really worried that she would feel lonely sitting here eating all by herself." This little boy is three years old and already had the capacity to think of the feelings of others and to feel compassion towards another person.
